In the 1968 document " Humanae Vitae ," everybody felt like a bomb hit society. The Catholic Church was reaffirming its stance on contraception. In Section 6, Pope Paul VI makes several predictions. He said we would see:
   1. Lowering of morality, (check out today's afternoon soaps, talk shows, MTV)
   2. Disregard for physical and emotional well being of women by men. (internet porn)
   3. Government would use family planning for coercive purposes. (UN population control)
   4. Women would begin to treat their bodies as if they are machines. (Surrogate mothers, invitro fertilizations.)

Again, the critical moral contribution of heroes is the expansion of our sense of possibility. If we most of us, as Thoreau said, live lives of quiet desperation, it is because our horizons of possibility are too cramped. Heroes can help us lift our eyes a little higher. Immanuel Kant said that "from the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made." That may well be true. But some have used that warped, knotted timber to build more boldly and beautifully than others, and we may all benefit by their examples. Heaven knows we need those examples now.

Steroid use is on the rise in Australia. Recent figures from the Australian Crime Commission show that the number of steroid-linked arrests and seizures hit a record high in 2011-12. Data from the latest Australian Needle Syringe Program survey showed almost three-quarters of new needle drug users in NSW took image and performance enhancing drugs, predominantly steroids. In November last year, youth workers in Melbourne were reported as saying the number of illegal steroid users obtaining free injecting equipment is increasing, particularly among young men using late-night mobile services.
